In the era of COVID cancelling performances worldwide, the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance strove to maintain a performance element for students. Sly Pup Productions was hired by University Productions to produce recorded performances for the entirety of the 2020-2021 season. We covered Dance, Musical Theatre, Theatre, and Opera performances, each presented in various venues around campus and following the health guidelines set by the University. The recordings were presented as live premieres on Facebook and Youtube - and unique to the situation, each cast was able to watch their own ‘opening night’.
Each show presented its own creative challenges, and Sly Pup worked closely with each creative team to decide how to capture each performance. The play A Beautiful Country for example was recorded in short segments with highly directed camera movement, much like the recording process of cinema.
Other performances like the musical Godspell or the opera Proving Up were recorded as normal performances - except for the numerous breaks required for COVID safety.
In total, Sly Pup Productions provided audio and video recording, editing and mixing, color correction, captioning, and credits for 7 productions during the season.
